The Moodle Glossary tool is a great tool for helping your students with vocabulary. The way the Moodle Glossary Tool works is that every time a word is entered into the glossary it is hyper-linked wherever it appears in the course. Much like wikipedia. Then the user can click on the term and see the word defined.
Strategies for Using the Moodle Glossary
Strategy #1: Use more than text in your entries. You can enter more than just text into your glossary entry. You can also add sound or pictures or even a video. This is a great for ELL learners or foreign language students!
Strategy #2: Have your students add to the glossary. Often teachers are the only ones doing the work of adding to the glossary. Another great strategy is to have your students add important vocabulary words from their reading to the Moodle Glossary. This way they gain shared understandings and you create a distributed learning environment as students describe key words and concepts in their own way.
Other good ideas include using it for students to introduce themselves, book reviews, biographies etc. The possibilities are endless.
