Google Forms or Moodle Quizzes the Pros and Cons of Each

google forms or moodle quizzesThere obviously is not a right or wrong answer.  There is likely a place in most Moodle courses for the inclusion of both a Google form and a Moodle Quiz.  The answer to when to use one over the other is going to fall based on the purpose of the activity and the comfort/experience of the teacher building the assessment.

In no particular order I’ve listed a number of advantages and disadvantages for using each.  By no means is this an all exhaustive list for advantages/disadvantages of each.

Google Form Advantages:

– Quick and easy to create.

– Form are easy to embed within Moodle. For example, when assigning a video for students to watch, place it on a page. Embed the Google form beneath the video as a quick comprehension check or reflection on the video.

– Easier for multiple users to work on at the same time when editing rights are shared.

– Forms provide easy access to longer text responses from an entire group of students when responses are viewed in a spreadsheet.

– Students from multiple classes can all complete the same Form for easy direct comparison of responses among different groups.

Google Form Disadvantages:

– Forms are not automatically graded. Teachers need to manually grade each question or use a script such as Flubaroo.

– A grade (score) on the form is not automatically entered in Moodle.

– Question order cannot be randomized nor can multiple choice options be randomized.

– You cannot have the form randomly selected questions from a category. All users always have the same questions for each attempt.

– There is not an option to provide feedback to students within the quiz or immediately after the quiz.

Moodle Quiz Advantages

– You have many more question types available to you. Math especially has very powerful options available in the calculated, calculated multiple choice, calculated simple, and numerical question types.

– Once a question is written it is available for you to use on any quiz within your course. Your questions can also be exported for use in other courses.

– You have the ability to quickly generate many questions such as multiple choice in a word processing document (and after saving in GIFT format) importing these into Moodle.

– You have much greater control over how many attempts are allowed.

– Question order can be randomized.

– Questions can be drawn randomly from a category or subcategory.

– Answers are automatically graded (except for essay) and the grade appears in the grade book automatically.

– You can personalize settings for students. For example, you can set a time limit for the class, but also set an override of this time limit for individual students. This is especially useful for students who have an IEP that requires additional time for tests. – This is just one example of how to use a quiz override.

– You can provide overall feedback for an entire quiz, for each question attempted and for each correct and incorrect answer choice.

– You do not have the extra steps of embedding the quiz in Moodle.

– The quiz score can be used as a conditional for accessing items in Moodle. For example, you may prohibit access to another resource, activity or section based on a quiz score.

– You have many options for how students interact with the quiz. You control how students see feedback for answers. Students can see if answers or correct or incorrect during the quiz, immediately after the quiz or not at all. Students will not receive feedback from a Google forum.

– The quiz is seemingly a much more powerful option for formative assessment with the options to include feedback for individual responses. When you know that students commonly have a misconception, build a feedback response into the quiz for that incorrect answer. Allow multiple attempts for a quiz.

– A quiz can easily be backed up in one teacher’s course and restored in another teacher’s course.

– The quiz provides the option to use CBM – Confidence Based Marking. Students indicate their confidence in an answer. The higher the confidence level they select, the greater the point value they’ll receive.

– Questions can be assigned different point values.

Moodle Quiz Disadvantages

– It is likely more difficult to learn how to use the Quiz.

– The quiz can be more time consuming to create.

As I said above, this is not an exhaustive list of advantages and disadvantages.
