Removing Sections Numbers from your Course in Moodle

Directions for Removing Sections Numbers from your Course in Moodle

Note:  In order for the technique shown on the page resource link below a specific admin setting is required. If you try the technique and it does not work, you will need to contact your system admin regarding the following setting:

SettingsSite Administration – Security – Site Policies – Enable Trusted Content

Enable Trusted Content must be set to allow (checked).  The default setting is to not allow enable trusted content.

1. Edit your profile.  Change when editing text from Use HTML editor (some browsers only) to Use Standard Web forms as shown in the image below:

Steps for Removing Section Numbers from your Course in Moodle 1

2. Add a label to any section in your course and paste in the text as shown in the Label text*example below.  (You might want to place it in wither the header section that always appears or perhaps the last section of your course.  (Select a section that you’ll remember).

3. You may want to copy and paste the text shown above from this document:

<style
type=”text/css”>.course‐content
ul.topics
li.section
.left{font‐size:0;}</style>

4.  After pasting in the html code.  Click on Save and return to course.

5.  When you return to the course, you will only see editing icons for your label as you see in the screenshot shown below:

Editing symbols for the news forum.

Editing symbols for the label just created.  Unless you also entered text to be displayed you will only see editing icons with nothing else displayed.

6. You may still see section numbers in your course.  If you do, turn off editing to see if they display when editing is off.  For example, the anomaly theme displays section numbers when you are editing but not when editing is off.  The overlay theme does not display numbers whether editing is on or off.  Or, you may find that this technique does not work for the theme you are currently using.

Disclaimer:  This technique may not work with all themes.

End-User Support for Moodle course instructors is available through our Moodle Reference Desk.
