Setting up an eCommerce Site to Sell Your Online Courses

There are three components you need to consider to set up an eCommerce site to sell your courses online:

Step 1: Start with Your Website

Many online entrepreneurs get busy making their courses, but don’t think about how they are going to sell their courses online until the very end. While you maybe able to incorporate a simple online store (i.e. paypal) and some marketing materials on the front page of your course ware, it may not be the best choice. That is because the software used to house your software probably isn’t built to have good search engine optimization. Search engine optimization (aka SEO) is the process of maximizing the number of visitors to a particular website by ensuring that the site appears high on the list of results returned by a search engine.

Word PressWe recommend WordPress as a web software to create your website for the following reasons:

  • It is the largest open source content management system in the world
  • Has great SEO (Search Engine Optimization)
  • Has many great themes to choose from
  • Because it is open-source it is inexpensive
  • Has a nice looking online store
  • Is compatible and has SSO (single sign-on with the LMS systems we support)
  • Has lots of plugins to customize your site

Step 2: Set-up eCommerce Store

Your online store will be housed on your website.  You will need a payment gateway to accept credit cards. The payment gateway is the service that will deposit the payments to your bank. They typically charge a processing fee for each transaction. Common payment gateways include: PayPal, Stripe, and Course Merchant.

You also need a place to house and manage your online courses. The software is called a learning management system. You want a set-up where your online store will automatically enroll the students in the courses they purchased and requires no extra work on your part.

Step 3: Choose a Learning Management System

A learning management system (aka LMS) is necessary to house your courses and manage and track learning. You need a LMS that can do the following:

  • Requires a login
  • Tracks users and progress in a course
  • Produces reports
  • Can issue certificates of completion
